• American and Canada are the best in Women’s Hockey

The show is always the clash of the Titans and there is no reason why it should be otherwise because when it comes to Women’s Hockey, the teams from Canada and America are a million times better than the rest of the teams and inevitably the finals are always played between the women’s hockey teams from the two countries. Only exception in recent times was some four years back when Swedish team got the better of the American Team in semi-finals to only eventually lose to their Canadian counterparts.

But that’s no reason why Canada or USA or for that matter any country should refrain from participating because anyway it’s the survival of the fittest and the best country wins and should win. The competition has remained ever so for a long time now and the main reason is that though the other teams have improved, the teams from USA and Canada have improved as well.

But, don’t be trifle disappointed if the goal sheet doesn’t register high or frequent or both results. Apparently, both the teams believe in being astute and abiding by all the rules of the game, to the last syllable and when a team does this, then the goals are likely to be lopsided because fair play and high score seldom go together. But teams aren’t any worse because of it and give each other a tough competition in the deciding match to claim the gold.

Ice hockey has been an important part of the Winter Olympics. Before it was a male dominated era but the women have surely made their mark here.

  • India beat Argentian 3-2 in second match of test series.

Sandeep Singh Indian hockey seems to have benefited after the ad-hoc committee was put into place, displacing the long and autocratic regime of KPS Gill. India currently touring Argentina for a four test match series is doing extremely well. India defeated Argentina 3-2 in the second match at Estadio Panamericano on Tuesday, 20 January. Close on the heels of their 2-1 victory the previous day, the Indian side showed great resolve to score the winner against a quality Argentinian side.

Hockey players, centre-forward Shivendra Singh (12th min), Prabhjot Singh (40th min) and captain Sandeep Singh (59th min) scored the goals for the visitors while Mario Almada (13th) and Pedro Ibarra (46th) found the net for Argentina. It was clearly a well-carved team show from the eight time Olympic champs. Although the defence still needs to shape up to guard their lead. As early as in the fourth minute, India had a chance of taking the lead but Argentina goalkeeper Juan Manuel Vivaldi saved Shivendra’s deflection from a Prabhjot set up. For the second consecutive day, the Indian mid-fielders and linkmen Vikram Pillay, Rajpal Singh and VS Vinaya were outstanding at their work, setting up the forwards with accurately measured passes.

India came out all guns blazing in the second half to regain the lead in the 40th minute off a counter attack set by Shivendra. Exhibiting classy baseline control and skills, Prabhjot and Khandker initiated the move and zeroed in before the former found the target to give the visitors 2-1.

Six minutes later the Indian’s paid the price for their over aggression when Matias Rey stole the ball from Rajpal and sent a long overhead to unmarked Lucas Vila who took full advantage of Indian defender’s casual attitude to set it up for Ibarra who made no mistake in levelling the scores.

Indian’s new skipper Sandeep Singh has almost had a fairytale ascent in the Indian team. If one remembers, Sandeep Singh fought death closely after an accident to make an improbable comeback which was ruled out by doctors too. Sandeep Singh is confident of holding a team consisting of juniors and seniors, he says, “I will take cue from Dhoni who is doing brilliantly to handle juniors and seniors alike”.
